Today’s installment in the Booms and Claps Mix Series comes to us from Bristol-based uptempo bass music producer Hyroglifics, and while most would consider him first-and-foremost a drum and bass producer, he’s not quite so easy to categorize. He exploded onto the scene six years ago with his freshman excursion, “BINARY Vol. 1” on the widely respected Critical Sound label. This release took the world of “DnB adjacent” music by storm with two absolutely gully halftime 170bpm bangers (“Killamanaman” and “Bay City Ballers Club) that quickly garnered support from legends like Om Unit, Ivy Lab, Sam Binga, and Alix Perez.
Ever since then, he’s been tracing the lines between drum and bass, hip hop, jungle, trap beats, dub, footwork, and everything in between, and has explored beyond his home at Critical Sound to Flexout Audio, Perez’s 1985 Music, and Fracture’s Astrophonica, achieved Red Bull Music Academy alum status, created a new beat music alias Rippps (with a release on the legendary Alpha Pup Records to boot) and toured all over the world. Most recently, his collaborative EP, “BS6″with Detroit-bred Sinistarr (BnC Mix Series alum!) was released on Sherelle and Naina’s new London-based label Hooversound, one of the most exciting fresh imprints of the year.
While he came up in the drum and bass scene, Hyroglifics is certainly no stranger to other tempos and sounds. Today’s offering travels through slappinin’ electro and breaks, dubstep and grime, and ends up in 160-170 bpm rave territory that touches on ghettotech, jungle, beats, and bass. His classic well-sought-after dubplate collaboration with Fixate, “Daft” even makes an appearance, an unreleased iconic track that first started making the rounds at least 5 years ago.
