SOLID STEEL 01.03.19 – BEN UFO

Solid Steel – the world’s longest running mix series – returns with a special two-hour mix from Ben UFO.

Speaking to us about the mix, Ben said: “This is the set I played at last year’s Meakusma Festival. It’s been one of my favourite events for the past three years running, and I’ve programmed a stage at the last two editions. Last summer I was joined by Kara-Lis Coverdale, Jay Glass Dubs and the Timedance crew – Batu, Ploy and Bruce. It’s one of the only events I can think of where dance music co-exists with a broad range of experimental music in a way that feels natural, unpretentious and unforced. I love it there, and hopefully that comes across in this recording.”

A partial tracklist is available via Avalon Emerson’s recently launched Buy Music Club – https://ift.tt/2EJDAOY – a platform for connecting listeners directly with links to buy any tracks available on Bandcamp.

Solid Steel also continues our long standing association with NTS Radio who will broadcast a first play of each show ahead of it being made available online.

Created in 1988 by Coldcut, and broadcasting on the then pirate radio station Kiss FM, Solid Steel has been releasing mixes for the past 30 years, bringing the weekly shows to an end in December 2018 with a final guest mix from Juan Atkins (the first guest to appear on the show in 1988). Returning for 2019 in a new, more focussed monthly format, continuing Solid Steel’s long history of supporting the best of both established and emerging artists. Head over to https://ift.tt/2VBSbBX for all the archive shows, tracklists and more.

Solid Steel Radio Show 30/11/2018 Hour 2 – Smith and Mighty

In Hour 2 celebrating 30 years since their first release, on November 16th foundation laying forefathers Smith & Mighty release ‘Ashley Road Sessions’. This special one-off double label partnership between Pinch’s Tectonic and Peverelist’s Punch Drunk is an endeavour in homage to their Bristol neighbours, whom they both hold in high regard.
“Smith & Mighty are true pioneers in music whom I’ve found deeply inspirational on many levels. Tracks like ‘Closer’, ‘U Dub’ and ‘Same’ are some of my all-time favourites. To be putting out these unreleased gems is such an exciting project for both me and Tom. We both took a great deal of influence from Smith & Mighty – especially from ‘Bass Is Maternal’ – the album and era from which most of this compilation’s source material originates.” Pinch
It’s irrefutable and well documented that Smith & Mighty are integral to the story of Bristol music, but the duo (and occasional trio) are accountable not only as key proponents of that local sound, but also for propagating the wider array of much urban and electronic music, to this day. Rob Smith told us;
“After much deliberation, I decided to make a mix of some of the remix works I’ve been invollved with over the years. hope you enjoy!”

Solid Steel Radio Show 24/8/2018 Hour 2 – Tim Parker

In Hour 2 we hand over to Tim Parker who has maintained a secure taste-maker status at the heart of the British hip-hop and alt-electronica landscape as a club & radio DJ for almost a decade. His Slanted EP drops on 31st August featuring 3 original compositions and a guest appearance from BSN Posse. He had this to say about his mix;
“I always enjoy playing at our 20/20 club nights, especially on the Corsica sound system where even the most stripped back music can sound incredible. I have played at various times of night and this mix is a taster of tracks which could go down right as the doors open, all the way through to some heavier hitters. It’s essentially a raw mix of beats straight from the turntables, featuring lots of both old and new cuts.”

Solid Steel Radio Show 13/7/2018 Hour 2 – Shy One

In Hour 2 we welcome Shy One who is also playing at Outlook this year and has been involved deeply in music for nearly a decade. It began for her in 2003, just as grime was emerging as a musical force and a year later she began to play with Fruityloops, trying to find her own sound within the spectrum of grime. She began to pick up on dubstep sounds, then going back to hip hop, jazz and the whole wider world of music, and gradually drifted away first from grime and then from production itself. Scratcha DVA convinced her that her skills and eclectic tastes still had value. When he signed the “Decaffeinated Love EP” to his label, she began to take things more seriously and last year she released ‘Waterfalls’. She told us;
“This selection consists of some current personal faves – mostly by London artists I’ve had the pleasure of playing alongside, many of whom I consider as friends/family. I’m falling in love with my own city and this mix gives you a good idea as to why – these are the musicians who inspire and influence me the most.”

Solid Steel Radio Show 8/6/2018 Hour 1 – Everything Is Recorded

Solid Steel (8th June) This week we’re delighted to welcome Everything Is Recorded, the project from Richard Russell who is the head of XL Recordings. The album features appearances from Ibeyi, Sampha, Giggs, Wiki, Syd, and Kamasi Washington among others. He had this to say about his mix;
“The “Everything Is Recorded” album was really made for home listening, its quite reflective. However the sound of it is very influenced by music i’ve always played as a DJ. When Solid Steel asked me to do a DJ mix i grabbed all the album acapellas and some favourite tunes from the genres that inspired the album: a lot of 80’s dancehall, that raw first digital phase of reggae, and 2002 grime, the first wave of eski stuff, and also classic hardcore rave, the scene i came out of, that XL came out of.
Putting the album back amongst all the music that inspired it felt very natural. I played it to Sampha, Infinite and Ibeyi and they all seemed to dig hearing their vocals recontextualised… this mix ties a few threads together. I also did a couple of remixes of older tunes i produced; the Gil Scott Heron “I’lll Take Care Of You” song has a lot of personal meaning for me, and its of course already been remixed by Jamie xx, and sampled by Drake and Rihanna, but i take it somewhere else here. full circle. There are also 2 songs which have never existed in any form, “Computer Love” (Zapp cover which we’ve performed live) and 8am (new song). The versions of these 2 songs included here are exclusive to this mix.”

Solid Steel Radio Show 6/4/2018 Hour 2 – Adam Freeland

In Hour 2 we hand over to Adam Freeland who has been producing music for over two decades, which included running his Marine Parade label out of Brighton, a 10 year residency at Fabric and nomination for a Grammy. Now he is part of The Acid, which includes RY X from The Howling. He told us;
“This mix is really just an acknowledgement of my lifelong love of arpeggiators and excitement for this new wave of arpeggiated synth stuff combined with some deeper drones and desert psych influences. I’m living totally off grid way out in the Mohave desert near Joshua tree, where this mix was recorded. My studio is solar powered ( no other option out here), there’s an exhilarating feeling to know that the photons running through the circuit boards of my machines emanated from the surface the Sun just 8 mins and 20 seconds prior. Of late, I’ve been more focused on my band ‘The Acid’ and pursuing my lifelong dream of living off grid and figuring out how to build a house than DJing. Incase you missed it we ( The Acid) put out a debut album called ‘Liminal’ and more recently we scored a documentary film ‘the bomb’ a documentary about the story of nuclear weapons. We have been touring film festivals, performing the score in a 360 immersive environment live to the film. In December we performed it live at the Nobel peace prize ceremonies in Oslo which was in incredibly inspiring and moving experience for me. You can check the score/soundtrack here or Watch the film on Netflix here or come see us play live, next UK gig Camden Roundhouse Jan 2019(tbc)”

Solid Steel Radio Show 22/7/2016 Hour 1 – Paleman

Solid Steel (22nd July) In Hour 1 we invite Paleman to Solid Steel. He’s had a string of releases on Loefah’s Swamp 81 and sub label 81, from his collaboration with Zed Bias, to the club anthem Beezledub and most recently the Yrs Ago / Animus 12″. He told us;
“Thanks for listening to my mix for Solid Steel radio – it was an honour to be asked and to record the mix. My thoughts behind the mix were to capture the mood i’m in musically at the moment. It seems I’m attracted to tunes where the mood is an ambiguous blend of emotions rather than an open celebration of one or the other. Joy mixed with paranoia. Hope mixed with uncertainty. Confidence mixed with self doubt. All the in-between states of daily life. I love music that straddles the emotions and leaves you a little dazed but not confused – allowing you to reflect and analyse your thoughts whilst experiencing it. There is some new music from up and coming artists who email me their tunes regularly for my radio show, a lot of my own sketches and unreleased tunes and also snippets of film soundtracks from modern horror films and also some 20th century classical music. I really hope you enjoy the mix..I enjoyed compiling something that is away from clubland but also reflects it in some ways. Like a painting of a painting of a painting or a fractal mirror in a hotel lift. Hopefully the mood and colours intrigue the listener a little when they sit down with the mix : )”

Solid Steel Radio Show 17/6/2016 Hour 2 – Ivy Lab

Solid Steel in association with Serato (17th June) Ivy Lab step up in Hour 2 following the release of their Fortuna EP on 20/20 LDN that features the vocal talents of Roses Gabor. Formed by producers Sabre, Stray and Halogenix, Ivy Lab are a North London collective that is part of a nascent movement of bass music refugees cross-pollinating UK sound system culture. We hear tracks from Alix Perez, Richie Brains, Sa Ra, Diemantle, Jon 1st and Max Richter. You can catch them at their launch party at Phonox, London on 20th June. They had this to say about their mix;
“Maybe a touch more energy than what we’re put together for previous Ivy lab studio mixes, and is perhaps closer to what you hear from us in our club sets these days ….but the genre pool is still  quintessentially 20/20 : bassweight rowdy halftime, loose grooved lofi beats scene stuff, and jungle/footwork inspired 160 shit.”

Solid Steel Radio Show 6/5/2016 Hour 1 – Phaeleh

Solid Steel in association with Serato (6th May) Phaeleh is our guest in Hour 1 this week, following the release of his EP ‘All that remains’ last month. The Bristol based producer has been releasing music since 2008, but pretty silent for the last couple of years working on his next album. His mix features music from Arkist, John Tejada, Afriqua, Roska, DMX Krew, DieMantle and Boards of Canada and you can catch him playing this weekend when he curates a room at Fabric on May 6th involving the likes of Om Unit, D-Bridge and Djrum, whilst The Bug, Pinch and Loefah take care of the room next door. He told us;
“This is the DJ set I’d play for myself, at my own house party, without my name on a flyer. I’ve chosen tracks from various eras and genres so you can get a insight of what I’m into. Please listen with a Gin & Tonic or Mojito.”
